Eagles triumphed

Geylang United defeated SAFFC 2-0 at the Bedok Stadium despite still not getting their Argentine forward, as he failed his Beep Test.

Therefore it is consider more than a brilliant triumph as the Warriors have won their last two matches while the Eagles were still searching for their first one.

Yet nobody told the Eagles the script as they did not keep to their usual script (of just defend and defend) and instead they outplayed the Warriors for much of the match.

Indeed the Warriors coach Richard Bok remarked that injuries and suspensions has taken a big toll on the Warriors and whatever he did in the dressing room at the break, it did not work as the second period saw the Eagles gaining more strength.

There was no escape as Korean midfielder Kim Jae Hong make a clever decoy turn that left the SAFFC defenders flat-footed and came bearing down towards the SAFFC box and tried to play a cool pass to Hafiz Rahim.

The ball ended up reaching another Hafiz – SAFFC’s Hafiz Osman, to be precise – but the defender produced an awkward header that ended up giving Geylang’s Hafiz the perfect chance to volley low and send the ball sizzling past Shahril Jantan at the left post.

The Warriors try to stage a comeback but the Eagles ended it as Masrezwan received the ball but still had five white shirts to beat and he went with the one closest to him, and once he had pulled past Hafiz, the coast was clear for him to storm into the box.

Odds-on to finish off the move, the former SAFFC striker lived up to expectations, converting with a venomous drive that Shahril was simply unable to get a hand to.

The victory was set and the Eagles have won their first match of the 2011 season.

Another match involving Balestier Khalsa and Courts Young Lions at the Toa Poyah stadium was not as exciting as explained by Switchplay for just as I expected, the Tigers cannot switch to playing attacking football.

So even with a man advantage, as the Cubs lost Shakir Hamzah, the match ended 0-0 with little created according to the blog.
