Etoile win League Cup

French side Etoile FC has won the 2010 League Cup as they defeated Woodlands Wellington 3-1 in the Final at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

The French side were the heavy favourite and they showcased why as they pinned back the Rams throughout the first half but they were guilty of wasteful finishing as they failed to hit the back of the net.

Woodlands Wellington will make them pay for it as Moroccan striker Abdelhadi Laakkad scored with a brilliant freekick on the stroke of half-time.

That goal was Abdelhadi Laakkad 59th goal for the Rams and it saw him pull level with, now Gombak United, striker Agu Casmir as the club all-time top scorer.

The story nearly got better for the 32-year-old as the Rams won a penalty in the second half soon after Etoile FC drew level with a Leeroy Anton goal.

It will have seem him overtake Casmir and give the Rams the lead again as well as, maybe, see his club win the League Cup but it was not to be.

He blasted the shot way over the bar and it was the start of a nightmare night for him.

While he failed with spotkick, Etoile FC did not failed with their as Matthias Verschave blasted the ball into the net with 6 minutes to go.

Then Abdelhadi Laakkad will go on to get himself send off as the clock wine down to injury time when he attempted to release his frustration in nearly headbutting an Etolie FC player.

A fairy tale story set up for him to be both Woodlands Wellington all-time top scorer as well being the hero of the night has now become a nightmare.

French player Leeroy Anton then scored his second goal of the night deep into injury time and the Rams players reacted as they felt the French side 'overcelebrated'.

Luckily, cool heads prevailed and Etoile FC lifted their first trophy in their short football history.

Earlier in the humid afternoon, Sengkang Punggol beat Gombak United 2-1 with goals from Mamadou Diallo and Abdoulaye Diallo. Fazrul Nawaz had scored for the Bulls while Ruhaizad Ismail got himself send off.
