Jurong FC vs SAFFC

Jurong FC was not one of the 8 pioneer clubs of the S-league in 1996 and it was a major disappointment for the club management as they were one of the few in the Malaysia Cup era that fought for the end of Singapore involvement in the M-league and the started of Singapore own professional league since the days of the Singapore Premier League.

The club only entered the S-league in 1997 at their second attempt but the club never captured their glory days of the Singapore Premier League.

Jurong FC was formed in 1975 when they were known as Jurong Town and was given a place in Division 1 in the National Football League in 1976 despite not playing in Division 2 at any time. The club played in Division 1 until 1987 when they were relegated to Division 2.

Then in 1988 with the formation of the Singapore Premier League, Jurong Town was chosen again to join despite not being among the top clubs and it saw, a brief, glory days for the Western club as they will go on to finish runner-up in the League in 1989 and 1990 as well as winning the Cup Double - President Cup and Pools FA Cup - in 1989.

SAFFC has it roots from the SAFSA team that participated in the 1975 first-ever National Football League.

The club won the league title 3 times (1978, 1981, 1986) along with the President Cup 4 times (1976, 1978, 1984, 1986) during the National Football League days.

Then in 1990 when the club was in the Premier League era, the club won the FA Cup.

With the formation of the S-league, SAFFC was given the Jurong Stadium deserted by the excluded Jurong thus laying the ground for the Jurong Derby that was to begin when Jurong FC entered the S-league and had to give up their rights to that stadium and played at Clementi until 1998 when they shifted to the then newly build Jurong East Stadium .

However, it was a David vs Goliath clash as Jurong FC was finding it difficult to match the standard set by SAFFC as the Warriors not only captured the S-league titles 4 times (1997, 1998, 2000, 2002) and 3 Cup titles (1997 League Cup and FA Cup, 1999 Singapore Cup) but also defeated Jurong FC in their first 6 encounters and it took the Cobras until 2000, 3 years after entering, to defeat SAFFC for the first time ever.

While Jurong FC was not a match against SAFFC in the league, they proved a formidable foe for SAFFC in the Cup as SAFFC was send crashing out of the 2002 and 2003 Singapore Cup by Jurong FC and Jurong FC best moment of the S-league years were in 1999 and 2002 when the club finished as runner-up in the Singapore Cup both times.

But disappointment were to follow in 2003 when the Crobas pulled out of the S-league due to financial difficulties.
