Eagles cement third spot

Geylang United are in unfamiliar territory, or familiar territory if one looked at their history, as they defeated Balestier Khalsa 2-0 to cement their hold of third spot.

Ever since the end of the 2003 season, the Eagles have fallen from their spot as one of S-league Big 3 - to be taken over by Tampines Rovers - and now, the Eagles are signaling they are ready to expand that group.

Last season they won the Singapore Cup, their first trophy in 9 years, and this season, they have build on that in the league as they seek to finish in the top 3 position - a spot once reserved for them as they only finished outside that in 2 of the first 8 seasons - for the first time in 7 years.

Few could have imaged they will do it this year but the results and, more importantly, the table do not lie.

They are now 4 points clear of the champions, who are in fourth place, and just another 4 points behind Leaders Tampines Rovers.

They achieved that by winning their fifth game in 6 matches as Syed Fadhil and Peter Tomko send the Tigers crashing at Toa Poyah Stadium.
