Tanjong Pagar United was defeated 1-2 by Balestier Khalsa at Toa Payoh as they were unsettled by a home side that went in hard time and time again.
After
the game, there was no smile on the Stewart’s face as he knew that his
players’ roughing out on the pitch was no laughing matter.
“We tried to play ugly and I have no apologies for how the boys were," he said.
“They played with their guts and that got us the much needed win."
The
Balestier head coach also lauded his players’ bravery as the number one
cause for the victory, and heaped praise on defender Paul Cunningham,
who was making his season debut as a striker.
“This was
nowhere near the performance we showed against Albirex Niigata and I
really don’t care how they played,” Stewart added.
“Paul
barely passed the fitness test two days ago and it was a tremendous
showing by him. As captain, he did well playing in a role that he isn’t
used to, while taking shots and almost finding the net.”
